Can I get and play Halo 2 Multiplayer Pack without the Halo 2 game?

I do not have Halo 2, but I am interested in obtaining the Halo 2 Map Pack for multiplayer battles. Is it possible to use it without the game, or is it necessary to get it?

Note: I own a 360, and am not connected to XBOX Live, but I am considering it at some point in the future.
