Can I get the halo 3 skull in a specific stage by only playing this stage and...

...not the whole campaign? i know i can get the skulls if i start a new solo game but i don't know if i can get them if i play only one stage...i recently finished the campaign and realised i didn't have a skull.do i have to play the whole story from the beggining?

You can play on any level that you want and get the skulls, you don't have to do the whole campaign in a single play through. Say for example, you're missing the skull on Cortana, you can go to the level only and as long as you start from the very beginning of the level, and have the correct difficulty settings, you'll be able to get the skull there.

As for what the skulls do, when you go to the campaign menu (where you select difficulty settings, and what level to start at) press the X button. This should bring up a menu listing all of the skulls that you have and their descriptions. Certain skulls increase the number of points you get (Iron skull for example) while others are just for fun or for show (Grunt Birthday Party skull for example).
