Can you choose your own character in Halo Wars?

I just bought Halo Wars and whenever I play online I'm forced to be a UNSC character. Is there any way I can play as the Covanent?

if you're playing against someone else, you can be the covanent. otherwise, you're the space marines through the campaign. no flood either.
