Do you lose EXP on Halo 3 Ranked online if you don't play well?

My friend thinks if you play a ranked match on Halo 3 really badly (unskillfully) you will lose EXP. I disagree. Why would you lose EXP if you aren't skilled (or as skilled as the other players) at the game? Someone please gimme a tie breaker!

You won't lose any EXP when you play bad on a ranked match, but you might lose "SKILL". The only way to lose EXP is to quit games early or lose your connection, which equals quiting the game early.
