Halo 3 disc "Unreadable"?

Ive been reading on here that people have had the same problem as me, everytime i put the halo 3 in my 360 i keep getting this message that says The disc is "Unreadable", but if i take the hard drive off then the game works fine, but i cant save it it took me forever to come up with the money for this game, and it not working ****es me off, anyways is there anyway around this? does anybody know what the problem is, because it works with call of duty just fine...please help, thanks

1.clean the disk and keep doing it until it works.
2.start the game and if the hard drive is like a memorycard for the gamecube, then put it back in once the game is ready
