which one of these games has the best gameplay, the best story, looks the best and which is the most fun to play? could you please rank them (gears of war 1 & 2 count as one, same for mass effect).

Gameplay, depends:
Gameplay (co-op): Gears of War
Gameplay (solo): Mass Effect if you like customization, Halo 3 if you like straight shooters
Story is hard to say for Halo, since you're not taking the first 2 into account

Graphics (Shininess): Halo 3
Graphics (grittiness/realism): Gears of War
Most fun (solo): Mass Effect
Most fun (multi): Halo 3

Halo 3 doesn't really have a good story at all, but it has solid gameplay and looks pretty good even though it's pretty old now.
Gears of War 1&2 look great, and have good gameplay but the story isn't there. Plus the online sucks in the both of them.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 are great games. Story is fantastic, Mass Effect 2 looks great(first mass effect is a little old but still look okay). Gameplay isn't as good as the other two, but it gets really tactical on the harder difficultys.
It all depends on what type of game your looking for. Great stories(mass effect games), great gameplay(halo3), or good gameplay and a decent story(gears).
Personally, I would choose the Mass Effect games. I love myself a good story.

They both have very solid gameplay so its hard to choose the best but i would have to give it to Gears of War because of the number of things you can do over Halo 3 such as getting in cover, blind fire, sight aiming, sprinting, and the many moves u can do in cover.
All in all both great games
