Halo 3 on xbox live - please help??

I Have Completed The Solo Campaign On Heroic Level But I Am New To Playing It Live Online. Why Is It That I Can Shoot Hell Out Of Other Players And They Dont Die But They Shoot Me Once Or Twice And I Do Die - It Is So Frustrating. Also What Do The Numbers Next To Your Rank And Gamertag Mean???

Many weapons have special characteistics...for instance the welder when you power it up can diable your opponets shields and the a second shot by a dualed weapon is a kills shot.

Also head shots are worth more than body shots. A battle rifle can kill in 2-3 shots.

Also sniper shot can 1 shot kill if aimed at the head.

Also tossing a hand grenade can drop shields aloowing easier killing.
