Halo 3 online how to join a game?

ok, i dont own the game im borrowing it from a friend, but i HAVE played online before and my question is: how do you join a random game of like slayer or something with 10 or so people, right now i can only play with 4 or less people and if i try to change to like social slayer or ranks it says i dont have the maps to play, i dont remember having to do any of thing before what do i do to just play a normal random game with plenty of people?

there are 2 types of basic game modes you can play with other people.

custom games and multiplayer

custom games are getting your own group of friends or whoever and playing your own type of map or game with no exp. In which case making your own map in forge. (editing maps) you will have to invite them or make join in session to open, so anybody can join

some multiplayer game modes in halo 3 such as ranked and social sometimes require the map packs avaible for halo3. Not all halo 3 game modes have to have the DLC content in order to play them, just some of them do. the cold storage is free, but the legendary and mythic are 800 mp each. In order to play certain game types in multiplayer you will have to download the certain map pack needed. you would just click on the game type you would play (if it let you) and wait for the multiplayer to find other players.
