Halo 3 split screen with black bars?

Whenever I play halo 3 on split screen, there are black bars on the side, like a movie, except for the black bars are on the side... When to go to one player, It shows the whole screen. I have a 37" HDTV And umm any way to stop the black bars on split screen?
