How can I improve gameplay and FPS on Halo 2 and Gears of War on Windows Vista?

I've got a Dell 1521 with 2GB RAM, an AMD athlon dual-core tk-55 and an ATI Radeon Xpress 1270 HyperMemory video card, i do love my games, but both halo 2 and gears of war ( and I expect others) are very jumpy i.e. Fps aint too good, everything else is fine, and knowing I cant upgrade my video card, is there anything i can do to stop the jumpy and slowness of the games?
