How did the Halo War start?

I was reading the Halo Contact Harvest novel. But it was kinda slow and boring so I stopped reading it about halfway through. But from what I read, Johnson went to investigate an alien ship and exchanged fire with them. Killing a few aliens. Is that what started everything?

No not really. The Covenant Made contact with the humans on the planet Reach and war broke out about 2220 or something like that.
