How did the master chief survive at the end of Halo 3?

Shouldn't the halo firing kill him.I know only the front half of the ship made it through the portal and that is how the arbiter got back. But if the chief didn't make it through, how did the blast from halo not kill him.

Odds are the portal master chief went through collapsed while he was in it and it cut the ship in half, with the front going to earth and the back was left adrift in space.

halo didnt go off it destroyed

Forward unto dawn got only halfway through the portal as the new halo detonated. the half with the arbiter made it through back to earth where as the master chief was stranded drifting in space.
