how to customize my character in halo 3?

ok so i made my character a looong time ago and just started playing again. i cant figure out for the life of me how to change armor around and customize my character. please be as descriptive as possible. thanks.

Press the start button at the main menu, go right to settings.

There should be an appearance option you can select.

From there it's very easy.

Anytime while you're playing, just press start to bring up the menu. Then head over to the right panel, and select Appearance. Here, you can customize armor, color, emblem, among several other things.
