I have xbox live Gold Membership, but i can't play ranked matches on Halo 3?

I have xbox live Gold Membership, but i can't play ranked matches on Halo 3?

Everytime, i go into matchmaking, select the ranked games on playlist, and i tells me i cannot play it because i don't have a xbox live gold membership, but i can play social matches and i do have Gold membership,

in a form of 48 hour memberships, does this matter? i purchased them off ebay, 15, 48 hour codes?

do you have ur own gamer tag b/c the ranked matches r only for ppl with their own gamer tags social is for both ppl w/ gamertags
