Always aim for the head. I would suggest playin thru the story mode several times, first on the easiest working your way up the difficulty ladder

Just going on a Map By Yourself Can do the world of good,

Concentrate on Finding good sniper spots or Abush places when you go alone

Ask a friend who's good at Halo 3 to tell you his/her tactics or Have a match against them but screenwatch to have look at what He/she does if he/she won't tell you

Also, Use good weapons which sync together, Like a Shotgun and a Sniper or a Energy sword and a Beam Rifle
