Is Halo 2 multiplayer for the PC free?

I see a thing one the cover of the PC version of a free online trial or something, so I'm not sure if you have to pay to play people online like the first one. So is it free like the first?

I thought it was free all the time, my brother plays it on his PC all the time and i dont recall him paying anything.
