There is a big difference in what you are saying. "Is it possible to play splitscreen online on halo 3?" No, but you can play online with 4 people, but you can't see the other players' point of view. You do need another live account because it is online. "Is it possible to play splitscreen OFFLINE on halo 3?" YES but only 2 players if you are doing campaign. If you are not, it's 4 players max. You need to create those OFFLINE free gamer accounts. Gamer accounts are free and you don't need live to get them. They are different than xbox live accounts. Gamer accounts is just giving you a name instead of "Player 1" or Player 2"

Tyler is right about all...he didnt mention that you also have the option to sign in another account and play split screen ranked matches. All you need is two XBL accounts and one xbox. sign them both in and you BOTH can talk on the headset and play ranked.

You can only use one account to play online in Halo 3, all you do is sign in a second, third, and even fourth controller as a guest. This way you can play with up to 4 people at a time on one screen with only one xbox live account. There are limitations however, you will not be able to play in an "ranked" playlists, but you are allowed to play in the "social" playlists.

Also, your guests will not be able to use a microphone to talk, but the main account can still use his.

It is possible with or without a second XBL account. If you don't have a second account then that person will be signed in as your guest and you can only play unranked playlists.
