Ranking system for lone wolves in halo 3.?

How does the ranking system for lone wolves work in halo 3? I get exp and go up in rank even though I don't win. Is it top 3 or what?

I think it's top two or 3, based on my observations, I have earned points for landing rank 2, not sure about rank 3.
