What game should I get? Gears of War 1 or Halo 3?

I need a game to entertain me through the holidays I have narrowed the ones I want down to these two. Which one should I get? Say stuff about how replayable they are, how good the multiplayer is and anything else that I should know.

Halo 3
Gears of War is kinda short
and Halo is great for online gaming with your friends

Halo 3 is more run and gun..
