what is halo 3 recon?

so ive heard about this and ive seen the trailer but ive heard its an entirely new game ive also heard its just an update with the mythic pack and lastly i heard it was an expansion. please help a confused gamer out.

it is an expansion stand alone disc that is a prequel to halo 3. and you play as a soldier.its comes out early 2009
