When IS halo Wars Based?

before, in the year 2531

back when Reach was still around, and Halo wasn't yet discovered. The game is about some of the UNSC's first battles against the Covenant. One thing that made me confused, however, is that you encounter the Flood in this game. The flood wasn't discovered til the first Halo game...
