who do you fight in halo 3?

I've never played it but my friend said you mostly fight brutes and flood. so i was wondering if in the game you fight the older covenant guys like Elites, Grunts, Hunters, Drones, and Jackals. do you EVER get to fight any of them?
i especially want to know about the ELITES
