Why can't I get any achievements on Halo 3 for Xbox 360?

I just got my xbox 360. the one with the 60 GB hard drive and the free month of silver xbox live. i made an account, and was NOT signed into xbox live. i played halo 3(by myself) on legendary and couldn't get any achievements. For example, i grabbed one of the skulls that was on the achievement list, and it didn't give me the achievement, also i finished levels, and yet again, no achievement... please help!!
BILLYBOB - no crap im signed in
INS4NEDR... - i basically finished the game and got no achievements
DEFENSE WINS GAMES - ???
FJAGUILA... - dont ask me the questions
TGR - refer to what i said above

check the achievement descriptions - some of the SILVER skulls do not give achievements, or the levels you completed the levels on may not match requirements

i recently started playing Halo 3 so i dont no much but i do know that

1. u should be able to get the achievements without live because i do
2. make sure ur on legendary
3. im thinking they might only be used to customize multiplayer characters, no campaign ones

It has nothing to do with being signed in or having the right Xbox Live gold/silver account. You get achievements if your signed in and if you're signed out. My girlfriend, who does not have an account, will also get achievments at the same time I do if we're playing a co-op game like Halo 3. So to me, it seems you just haven't really done anything yet to get an achievement. Keep playin', you'll get them all sooner or later.

does it have to do with you not having a gold account? i dont think that being signed in has anything to do with it from experience.
