Does anyone know how to join an online game in halo 3 for the 360?

Just got x got xbox live and when I click on custom games from the main menu,all I get is taken to a lobby where I can create my own game... I cannot figure out how to join other lobbys with other games already going. Does anyone know how to do this? Help is greatly appreciated

Stay out of custom matches. they are online, but only for you and your friends "you invite". you want to go to matchmaking and there you will be placed, you cannot choose what rooms you want other than setting what type your looking for. ex.team slayer, lone wolfs, etc. NOTE!!! if you do not have certain map packs downloaded, you will not be able to join matchmaking, were you will be playing ranked matches.
