Does Halo 2 for Xbox allow multiplayer with Xbox Live Silver on Xbox 360?

What I'm trying to find out is if I can play online multilayer with Halo 2 on an Xbox 360 with Xbox Live Silver (the free one). I'm new to all this Xbox live stuff and I was just wondering if this Xbox Live Silver is like free for Xbox 360 and paid for the original Xbox. I'm probably totally wrong, just need some clarification here.
