halo 1 on pc internet problems?

i have halo 1 on pc and it all works fine

but when i try to play online it wont let me
i have virginbroadband 512kbps and my internet works fine
but when i try to play halo with my friends it just doesnt connect

can some 1 plz help me cause i really want to play online?
p.s i think it may be sumtin to do with the ports if so can some 1 tell me how to open port 2302
