Halo 3... I can't start (continue) from my most recent save point...HELP!?

I haven't played Halo 3 in a while (about a month or so) and when I went to play it yesterday it didn't let me start from my most recent save point. The option at the top was "start solo campaign" and it usually says "continue solo campaign" or something like that. So then I went down to where you can choose the campaign you want to play and it didn't have up to my most recent save. I am much further in the game than it will let me start from and I don't want to go through it all again. This has happened a couple times and I've just sucked it up and continued from where it let me and went through it all again but I'm getting tired of doing that. at this rate I'll never get through the game! (which I've heard is relatively short). FYI, this happened once with Bioshock as well and I never figured it out in that game either, it. That makes me think I'm not doing something right. I'm making sure my profile is the one that's logged in on the system and that didn't work. any help??? Thanks!
So when it says "checkpoint" in the middle of a mission and I save it after I see that, the only way I can get back to that checkpoint is when I die and respawn? Can I restart from that point if I turn off the XBox and then play later as long as I haven't done anything else (DVD, another game, etc.)? thanks for all the help!

There are a couple possibilites here.
the main one would be, someone else somehow is accessing your 360 and playing the campaign.
Maybe if u have a brother, sister, or someone, maybe they started a new campaign.
I am Not sure exactly what happened, but the same thing honestly happened to me with halo 3 and gears.
I think its just the lack of playing or since there have been multiple updates, maybe the update has somehow ruined it.

Theres honestly nothing you could do to go back to ur other save point. Look into getting a new hard drive possibly.
