halo 3 lone wolves ranking question?

ok so i am a 38 in lone wolves and i got first place in one game with 24 kills and second place in the following game with 22 kills. i still didnt get to a 39. why??? also, is there a way that i can check how many more games i have to play in order to level up in number? thanks.

Its a pain leveling up in lone wolves. I think when i was trying to be a cournel grade 2(reach 40) that even though i got first place in two games and fourth in another it didnt rank me! its stupid
Just keep trying to stay in the top three and you'll rank up
