halo 3 on xbox live joining games?

Ok so i am connected, because it says 300000 plus people online but i cant get into any games, i am pretty dense i will admit so probably just missing something small.
How do i just connect to a current game and play?
When i try i end up hosting but then nooone joins how do i just join a game?
Ok been to matchmaking dont want to host games just want to join a game but theres no lists of people in any of the choices in matchmaking not like other games online where it just joins you to people who wanna play

The only way of having a Gold Account is by paying a subscription to Microsoft.
