Halo:3 or halo:3 ODST?

hey! i have kind of a problem, you see christmas is coming, and one of the things i want for christmas is a Halo game for my Xbox 360. i have heard that Halo:3 ODST is the best and newest version so i hope i get that, anyway my problem is this: i have never played a halo game before, and i guess i need to know the story of the game, so will someone please tell me the things i need to know about the other halo games, so im ready to play Halo:3 ODST when i get it thanks in advance

you should get halo 3 first and take a while playing that and learn the basics and understand the story. Then next christmas buy ODST because that is much harder and more advanced.
