How do i get friends on halo 3 live?

Ok so i'm new to live and want to play halo but cant find any games and reading some answers i have to play against freinds is this right? Where can i find heaps of friends i just wanna play dammit.
Ok can someone walk me through every step to join a game because i think i'm pretty dense because it still isnt working i have a free 1 month gold trial is that enough to play? Because i'm playing gta4 fine

i met most of friends through matchmaking. just socialize with players on the team. if tere is a player you like, press the xbox guide button, go to recent players(the icon that looks like the xbox controller), and find the gamertag of the player you played with and go to send friend invite

Okay, you don't require friends to play Halo 3 online. Playing online is how you meet friends.

However you do require a Gold Account, which is a subscription based service, if you do have a Gold Account, check your router settings.

If you only have a Silver (free) Account, then you are not able to play any Xbox 360 game online until you pay for your Xbox Live Service.
