How do you claim the skulls in halo 3?

I have found the skulls in Halo 3, but I do not get the achievement after I pick them up. So, how do I "claim" the skulls in order to get the achievement? Please help! I am already palying in Heroic and I still pick up the skulls and nothing happens.Thanks guys/gals.
