how do you rank up on Halo 3, during xbox live?

ive ranked sargeant but i dont know how, but im trying to become a captain how do you get better ranking?

You need a certain rank (1-50) and a certain amount of exp (games won) to reach any particular rank. To gain rank, you have to win ranked matches in matchmaking. Exp can be earned by winning ranked or social matches. The following site shows the skill level/exp required for each rank:

Your highest skill is the most important thing you want to look at. Try not to get a lot of exp because you will just stay the same rank, in the game there are two types of playlists, ranked and social. Ranked playlist make your ranking increase when you win games, but in the social playlist you just gain exp. An example for the ranked playlist ranking: Team slayer is a ranked game type, if it is the first time you have played this game type, you will be ranked a 1 in that gametype. If you win a game in team slayer, your rank might go up to 2 or 3 depending on other people's rank in the game type. So if your highest skill is 5 and you become a 6 in team slayer, your highest skill will become 6. To become a captain, you will need a highest skill of 20 and 100 exp. Hope this helps!

If you play ranked matches and you win your skill goes up and you get 1xp point per game. If you play social matches and you win you get 1xp per game and if you loose you don't get anything. If you loose a ranked match your skill might go down and you don't the xp point. To be a captin you need skill of 20 or higher and 100xp points.
