How does the ranking and exp system work in Halo 3?

How does it exactly work because I'm confused. Do you raise your skill level and exp by playing a match, or do you have to win a match? Can someone please explain this for me. Thanks

skill (the #) is to match you to same skilled players to get better w/ this you have to win games, and do it w/ style only in ranked matches. the rank(one w/ picture) is some thing you achieve when you have higher kills than deaths and the difference is what is add to the rank, you can rank up in social too.

The ranks of corporal sergent, etc. are obtained just by playing ranked matches. your skill level number depends on how many games you win
