how does the recover gamertag work? will i still have all my unlocks for halo 3?

Hi, i am planning to buy a xbox 360 120gb and i wanted to know how the recover gamertag works. Like if i recover gamertag will i still be on level 31 on halo 3 or do i have to start from scratch
