In halo 1 where where the brutes?

In halo 2 the brutes act like they have been there all along where were they in the first game also the same question 4 drones and prophets

Brutes were a different alien race until they were addmitted into the covenant. Same with drones. Prophets were always in the holy city so you never saw them
