In Halo 3, I can't seem to set the sensitivity of the controls right, any tips?

I know I am starting to sound like a ticket, but on maximum setting it feels fine for a bit, then I lose the control I had. On low settings it is fine for a bit then it becomes too slow. I just can't find the optimum setting for me.
Is there a guideline to live by with this sort of thing?
