...the humans and the covenant? its in the book i know that.what was the year of when the first met , and or declared the war?

i know it was before john aka master cheif but i can't remember exactly what happened that made them declare war, its been a while since i read the series but i think the covenant declared war on the humans just for the fun of it, what ever the reason is it dosen't really matter since they are no longer fighting for that same reason so long ago
