My xbox 360 f?reezes whenever I try to play halo 1 (team slayer). Why?

If I try to play against someone else on Halo 1 the game will freeze. I am playing it in a xbox 360 with 20gb hard drive. The game works in a regular xbox so its not that. I can play 2 player campaign just fine but anytime I try to play against someone right after I select the level it freezes(in the screen where you choose Slayer, King hill, team slayer, etc.
It is definitely used but it works in the regular xbox....
what is mass effect? would the system still play dvds and play halo if its crashed though?

Your 360 hard drive might have crashed it happened to mine when I would start up Mass Effect
