I think you should. It would make a really big difference. The story is really great. And, you would be missing a lot. They're all fun too. If I'm not mistaken you can play the first too on 360 as well. They're easy to find at Gamestop and cheap. I think you might be able to get them on Live maybe.

you would be the most confused person playing halo 3 because of the events that happen during the game wont make any scene so yes get the 360 and halo 1, 2, and 3. play them in order and you will love it.
u can buy halo 3 and know whats goin on but your missing out on some good stuff on 1 &2 so go ahead and play 1 and 2 they are cheap neways and ull like em!!

I'm assuming you want to play multiplayer on XBox Live, which is part of the huge appeal and playability of the game. To understand how to play online, you don't need to play the previous 2.
But if you really want to get what is going on in the Halo Universe, I recommend you play the two predecessors. The story line in the third is cool, but there are alot of twist in the plotline that would be given away just from playing the last one.
