There's not that much gore or swearing or anything, it's just that the game was thought to be pretty violent when it came out in 2001. Although now compared to all these other violent video games, like Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc, I'm pretty sure it'd be rated T.
It's graphics are terrible, the violence that prompted the rating are hardly visible through the frame rate issues and blocky textures. And even if you can make out a little splotch of blood it's not going to emotionally scar you for life.
If halo had never existed, and the first halo were to be released now, it would for sure get a T rating.
the ESRB are way to over-dramatic with their game ratings anyway.. Disney could probably make a movie out of the first halo and have it at a PG rating.
