What is required to play Halo 3 on XBOX 360?

My 2 sons received an xbox 360 (20 GB) for Christmas. They also received the game Halo 3. What else do they need to play it? Do they have to play it online? Do they need a "Gamer Card"
I need to know any and all info you can give me to get them playing. Do they need to purchase anything else? They mentioned a $50.00 anual Fee? I appreciate all you can tell me!!

You dont need any of that, the game is really short though so online play is recommended, I have it and there is no fee unless u want to play live but they give u a month free.
