What is the attraction to Halo 3 on XBOX LIVE?

Since Halo 3 came out (and I've kept track of this) my brother has averaged 3.5 hours per day playing Halo 3 on XBOX live. He has a normal social life for someone his age (8th grade) but he says that its just "so much fun that I can't put it down."

I've played Halo 3 and I found the story mode to be fun the first time, and I was completely bored with the online component after playing it for 15 minutes. What is the attraction here? It's ridiculous.

Like someone mentioned before it is a skill based game those with large to moderate skill enjoy wining so they keep playing. Some like the style of the game it is over others from its genre, this could be because it was (Halo 1) a classic that has been running for several years and is still running; just heading in a different direction (Halo Wars). Some play it just to talk trash....
Plenty of people do it for the social interaction with friends (customgames), the freedom to mess with the maps and create/modify gametypes.

I agree I don't like it very much. But I think the reason do tend to play is because they like the ranking system with everyone trying to reach General of what ever it is. It could also be because they lack other games to play maybe. I'm unsure of your current game collection but maybe you don't have games that appeal to him as much as Halo does. He may not have taken the time to play other games because he is so engrossed in Halo at the current time that he feels no need to play anything else. It is probably just because he wants to play games and that's his favorite. Much the same with me and Shadowrun even when I do rent out another game I still find myslef playing it more that the rented game itself.
