What is the storyline of halo 1 and 2?

I just got a 360 this summer and I want to get halo 3. I have never played halo 1 or 2 and I don't want to buy them because that is a waste of money if I will just get halo 3. So anyway I was wondering what the storyline of halo 1 and 2 is with spoilers and everything. As much detail as possible! But please DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING ABOUT HALO 3!!!
