What secrets to the halo universe were revealed in Halo 3 ODST?

So I just finished the game and realized that I never really payed attention to the story in ODST.

I payed lots of attention to the stories in Halo CE through Halo 3 but I guess I just forgot.

If anyone could enlighten me on some info revealed that would be awesome

Also, what was the after-credits scene about?
