It is after the fall of "Reach" which was the big war. One spartan was kept alive in a "Cryo Tube" where your body is preserved and you don't age. Then when you wake up from the tube, you figure out the ship your on (the pillar of autumn) is being attacked. You need to escape the Pillar of autumn and you are in a little pod that lands on a big ring called "Halo". You need to get through Halo and destroy it.
