whats the difference between custom games and matchmaking in halo 3?

Custom Games are games that you set the rules and are usualy just for you and your friends on XBL or can be played on a split screen with you and your friend that is playing with you on your 360. Matchmaking is played over XBL only and that is how you earn skill points and carrier points. Hope this helps out
