why cant i join my friends game in halo 3?

ok. when i try to join my friends game it just says "unable to connect to party group members" this is also the same thing for him. we are able to send messages to eachother but we cant join echothers games and we cant join a private chat channel. please someone help thanks

this happens to me too with one of my friends. but only when im playing through my router connection. but if i go straight from my modem to my 360 it works.
