Why doesnt it allow me to connect with my friend on Halo 1??

we have tried many ways to connect
making our own server
Direct ip
and none of these work, idk why
when we try to connect is says negotiating with server then stops and im back at halo's start menu
could anyone tell me how you connected with your friend and if you had this problem could you tell me how to resolve it

check your fire wall allow gamespy and halo to get internet that should fix the problem
