Can you be a female character on halo 3 online?

In the settings you can supposedly change your character to a female. Really all it does is make a female noise when you die, doesnt really look any different than master chief himself.
edit: to answer your question when you shoot a female in halo 3 they do make like a grunting noise that sounds very feminine.
